01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Ducking out of the busy flow of Yanaka and down a slender back alley leads to Soradakimono, a compact Japanese sweet shop set within a classic wooden house. Operating primarily over the weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the counter fills with seasonal confections carefully shaped by the proprietor.
The signature strawberry daifuku draws many through the door. A whisper-thin sheet of mochi and restrained sweet paste wrap the berry without competing with it, allowing the natural fruit juices and tart sweetness to take centre stage. The fruit lineup shifts with the calendar, introducing crisp apple daifuku as well as inventive varieties such as rum-raisin paired with ganache.
Traditional wagashi recipes ground the menu alongside modern fruit pairings. The petite mame daifuku balances fragrant glutinous rice, gently sweetened paste, and firm, savoury red peas, presenting simple ingredients with clarity. Seasonal offerings also include fig mushiyōkan (steamed adzuki jelly) with its textured crunch, kinako-dusted ohagi, and springtime cherry-blossom dōmyōji. For a savoury alternative, the shop steams chewy sekihan and seasoned okowa rice, which can be picked up as rice balls for an afternoon stroll.
Most orders are packaged for takeaway, though a bench outside allows visitors to enjoy an item while it is fresh. Because batches are small and supply is limited, arriving near opening time offers the widest selection.
